An electric fire pit, otherwise known as an electronic ignition fire pit, is a modern and convenient alternative to traditional wood fire pits. These innovative devices use electricity and gas to light themselves and provide visual appeal to an outdoor space. They come in various designs, making them a versatile addition to any patio or backyard setting.
Electric outdoor fire pits can range in size from small, portable models perfect for intimate gatherings, to larger, more permanent installations that serve as centerpieces for outdoor entertaining areas. Generally, the gas line remains open up to the ignition kit; however, it is halted by the ignition kit until power is initiated to release the gas up and out of the burner ports. You can also control electric fire pits remotely. Operate them via a light switch, remote, timer, or automation system for additional convenience. You can wire in an emergency stop for extra safety as well.
Can You Have an Electric Fire Pit?

Absolutely! Manufacturers design electric fire pits for use in residential and commercial spaces. They offer a clean and efficient way to enjoy the ambiance of a fire without the smoke, soot, or maintenance associated with wood-burning or gas fire pits. Installation is straightforward, usually requiring just a standard electrical outlet. This makes electric fire pits a practical choice for balconies, patios, and other areas; additionally, there are alternative options if you want to place your fire pit near a pool.
Are Electric Fire Pits Safe?

The numerous safety features installed in outdoor electric fire pits generally make them very safe. Here are a few of those features:
- Electronic Ignition: These fire pits use an electric spark to ignite the gas, eliminating the need for matches or lighters. This reduces the risk of accidental burns during ignition.
- Auto Shutoff: Many models have automatic shutoff features that activate if the flame is extinguished unexpectedly (e.g., by wind). This prevents gas from continuing to flow, which could pose a fire or explosion hazard.
- Flame Sensors: These sensors detect the presence of a flame. If the flame goes out, the sensor triggers the shutoff of the gas supply, ensuring that gas does not accumulate.
- Gas Control Valves: These valves control the gas flow to the fire pit. If an issue arises, the valve can shut off the gas flow, preventing leaks and potential hazards.
- Durable Construction: High-quality materials that can withstand high temperatures reduce the risk of structural failure that could cause gas leaks or other safety issues.
When correctly installed, maintained, and used according to the manufacturerâs guidelines, outdoor fire pits with electronic ignition can provide a safe and enjoyable experience. However, always prioritize safety by ensuring regular maintenance and responsible operation to minimize potential risks. How Does an Electric Fire Pit Work?

The electronic ignition system is typically plugged into a standard electrical outlet, but there are alternatives for special circumstances. When you press the ignition button on the control panel or remote, an electrical signal is sent to the ignition module. Once power is turned on, a small amount of gas comes out and the glow plug ignitor shines red hot.
The pilot flame lights itself, and once the flame sensor detects the flame, it sends a signal down to the control module which will then open up the main gas valve and release gas from the burner. The pilot flame will then light the main burner. The thermocouple detects the flame and signals the ignition module that ignition is successful. If the thermocouple does not detect a flame within a specific time frame (usually a few seconds), the ignition module will shut off the gas valve to prevent gas leakage.
To turn off your electric fire pit, simply press the off button on the control panel or remote. The ignition module will close the gas valve, stopping the gas flow and extinguishing the flames. Furthermore, many electronic ignition fire pits allow you to adjust the flame intensity through the control panel or remote.
